Aim of the Intensive Course
The aim of the Scientific Writing Intensive Course is to teach students and young researchers what the process of writing a scientific paper is all about. The ultimate goal is to start with raw data and finish the Intensive Course with a complete ReadyToPub full paper. The participants will be guided and trained on how to write and assemble a research paper section by section, according to their aims. In this way, we want to stimulate MSc and Ph.D. students in their thesis final stage as well as young researchers to publish their results in high impact factor journals. Furthermore, at the end of the Intensive Course, the participants may be able to replicate the knowledge acquired, by writing further scientific papers on their own. Let’s get them “out of the box” and get them acquire the “fire in the belly”.
Intensive Courses recipients
The Scientific Writing Intensive Course is dedicated to an open and general Academia audience: from students to researchers and early career Professors as well. In the weeks preceding each Intensive Course, a rigorous selection of the participants will be carried out based on criteria including the research background, the paper aim, the amount and type of data collected and the degree of innovation and publication feasibility. Priority will be given to MSc and Ph.D. students in the final stage of their thesis.
Intensive Course general structure and content
The Scientific Writing Intensive Course general duration is 10 days (8 hours a day, totalizing 80 hours). The course is divided into 8 distinct sessions to address the different steps and sections that compose a scientific paper.
On the first day of the Scientific Writing Intensive Course, a Scientific Writing Workshop will be available to the entire Academic community of the Institution where the Intensive Course will be carried out (the remaining seven sessions are exclusive for the selected candidates).
In this session a strategy will be underlined for each participant. A list of appropriate journals will be delivered and the paper will be conducted and written according to the selected journals.
In this session the entire data will be statistically revised according to each participant’s subject of study.
After statistics, the data will be presented in Figures and Tables in order to select the best representation form. The balance between Figures and Tables will be taken into consideration and with potential journals guidelines.
In this session instructions will be given to the participants on how to clearly present their problem, the current knowledge, how their work will expand such knowledge and how to clearly point out their objectives and how they will do it.
In this session participants will be guided through each sub-section of Material and Methods of their research paper: sampling, data collection, procedures, statistics, etc. Participants will be instructed on how to summarize those sub-sections without losing important information.
In the Results and Discussion session participants will be guided on how to highlight the most important results of their dataset, how to exploit them and how to correlate them with other evaluated parameters. Participants will be taught how to include statistics in their Results. Participants will also be trained on literature search to help them justify their data and explain certain processes and unexpected results. Brief sessions on how to report the potentialities and impact of the new results obtained to be used at different levels will also be developed for each participant.
For each participant, conclusions will be discussed as a group so that each individual understands how to extract value from different cases even if they are from other scientific fields.
At the end of this session and with all the acquired knowledge, the students will test their skills by writing an Abstract in record time (real exercise).
Is the paper finished yet? No! Let’s test the real understanding of the participants by allowing them to write Highlights/Key Messages, draw Graphical Abstracts, write a Cover Letter, and deal with tables and figures from Supplementary material.
At the end of these 8 sessions, the paper will be ReadyToPub
